Effective Home Training Methods for Patients with Mild to Moderate Alzheimer's Disease

Currently, most care for Alzheimer's patients is provided by family members. Therefore, home training methods are crucial. The following methods are simple and practical. After learning, family members or caregivers should participate together!

1. Puzzle

Complete jigsaw puzzles with the elderly or patients to exercise their brain skills.

2. Radicals

Pre-select words with some vacant letters on the table. Have family members or caregivers write a corresponding word with the elderly or patients and let them piece together the correct words.

3. Poker Solitaire

a. Ask the patient to solve a poker card by adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing.
b. Sort the cards by suit and arrange one group in order from small to large and the other group in order from large to small.
c. Fill in the blanks.

4. Keeping a Diary

At 6 PM every night, recall the daily events of the day, including the date, day of the week, weather, waking time, meals, interesting events, places visited, and people met.

5. Cultivating Interests and Hobbies

Encourage patients to sing for one hour daily if they enjoy singing. If they like to dance, dance indoors for one hour in winter and participate in square dancing in the park during summer. Patients can also go walking, jogging, swimming, or practice tai chi, accompanied by family members. Patients can watch TV to learn about current events and the weather, and indulge in their interests, such as watching an English-themed movie or reading favorite books. Playing mahjong or poker is also an option.

Remember, all family members must participate in these activities together. Don't worry about making mistakes, just practice together. Promise to arrange puzzle games for the patient once in the morning and once in the afternoon to avoid overwhelming them emotionally. Finally, ensure that the patient keeps a daily diary as memories are also precious.
